Preslav Literary School 'Sonuna'

Digital version (not compressed)

RzDz # 18 - MICHAEL BARTHEL 'Noch mehr höhlen'
CS / 40 ex./ last copies
Leipzig based artist Michael Barthel is releasing his own music since mid 90' on Recordings for the Summer. With sound poetry and conceptual art influences, Michael Barthel creates a prolific uncluterred and rough sound diary transmitting a strong feeling of inner space and time streching. Behind hiss and hum, Barthel deconstructs his voice and lifetime with a deliberatly poor range of gears and effects, using transparency almost as an ethic and aesthetic position.
Most of his works are sold out or published in very limited editions, mostly
on tapes, on his own Recordings For the Summer, but also on renowned labels
such as Tochnit
Aleph.
Noch Mehr Höhlen is edited on tapes in a limited run of 40 copies. Layout by Benjamin L. Aman with words by Michael Barthel.

# 17 - RUBÉN PATIÑO 'Eleven Stereo Movements'
CS / 40 ex./ last copies
Rubén Patiño also known as Pato is a laptop performer born in Barcelona and active since early 2000. Pato's sound has been described as hyper energetic algorithmic composition giving him a solid reputation for sound excess and confrontational live shows.
Eleven Stereo Movements is a quite singular work in Patiño's recent
releases. It was originally a conceptual proposal for a concert without
performer, played only one time in 2010 at Ausland in Berlin. Recalling
early BBC electronics pionneers as well as nervous digital patterns, these
eleven stereo movements succeeds in reaching the highest intensity without
any sorts of hurry or volume assault.
Patiño
is currently living in Rotterdam where he's completing a master in sonology.
Numerous live shows and releases to his credits on labels such as Mattin's
free Softwares Series, Le Petit Mignon or Skyndo.
Eleven Stereo Movement is edited on cassette in a limited run of 40 copies.

# 15 - GLUE POUR / PRESLAV LITERARY SCHOOL
'Telepathy Shots / Sonuna'
12" split LP / 300 ex.
Text by Lee Etherington*
"This split lp unites on vinyl two émigrés, one French, one English, both based in Berlin. Benjamin L. Aman (Glue Pour) and Adam Thomas (Preslav Literary School) also both use assorted hardware of indefinite antiquity, producing sound pieces that invoke feelings of psychological displacement and envelopment.
Preslav
Literary School’s ‘Sonuna’ is sorrowfully symphonic in
a way that recalls the recently passed Henryk Gorecki, a grand cathedral
of sound and emotion – cold, monumental, stopping in its tracks occasionally
to contemplate, before moving onward and deeper.
At around 16 minutes, an industrial reverie harmonises with the souls of
My Bloody Valentine burning in the grate. The granite edifice could turn
out to be made of thick ice, and despite very contrasting modus operandii,
there’s a feel to this piece that also nods towards Johann Johannsson.
Thomas’ tape loops are souls of undead sounds and the world he creates
speaks of a bleak and frozen European city scape, gothic architecture and
Cold War austerity.
Glue Pour then replies with ‘Telepathy Shots’ and we’re
now underwater in some kind of military industrial complex, lights failing
to pierce the unfathomable gloom, machinery severally struggling around
us as we fight to find our bearings. Depth is undefined but potentially
limitless – our vantage point is suspended in liquid yet straddling
a high wire with no ground in sight. Or are we on some H R Giger-designed
voyage into a murderous unknown? There’s a physicality to the mix
in this piece, the masked protagonists surrounding us as we wait to assess
their degree of malevolence.
Then it’s the soft fizz of the runout groove and the clunk of the tone arm returning to its cradle, and you’re back in the room."
* Lee Etherington is running the english renowned label NO-FI since 2006 (releases by C. Spencer Yeh, Pain Jerk, Yellow Swans, Sun City Girls, Otomo Yoshihide...).

RzDz # 14 - LEIF ELGGREN 'The Kings Curve'
C30 / 60 ex./ sold out
Leif Elggren's work is almost impossible to define in few words. Starting in the late 70' as a performer, visual and sound artist, he started to run the legendary Firework Edition in 1978, organising exhibitions and publishing sounds related items and prints. Co-creator of the schyzophrenic performative duo Sons of Gods with Kent Tankred in 1988, he's optionnaly proclaimed himself King of the expanding Kingdom of Elgaland Vargaland with Carl Michael von Hausswolff.
I really entered in LE 's work through his visual art and writings, actually
not his sound works. When i red Genealogy, the theoretical bases
of his work, the whole thing suddenly appeared to me. It was like hearing
a voice telling me how to build my own path through his work. Don't think
Genealogy will bring any piece of answer, it's only one more piece
in a large puzzle made of dreams and obsessions that LE is trying to re-compose
since 30 years. Part of Nordic Pavillon at the Venise Biennale in 2001,
his prolific work has been regularely exhibited and published worldwide
(recently at Palais de Tokyo in Paris and Niklas Belenius in Stockholm).
The Kings Curve is a thirty minutes insinuous and intimate spoken word : a unique sound piece from a unique artist, a vocal journey rewinding to the origin.*
The Kings Curve is edited on tapes in a limited run of 60 copies.
Visual & layout by Benjamin L. Aman.

RzDz # 12 - POSSET 'Speed Battle Cut'
C30 / 40 ex. / sold out
First time i met Joe 'Posset', it was in England in dec 09. We took part in Echolalia, an extended tapeloop orchestra set by Adam Thomas. Posset was sitting on my right side and shouting compulsively in his tape recorders during the show, like if he was eating and vomiting his gears at the same time.
These two pieces are the recording of someone's constructing a recording;
two studio based sound pieces by this Newcastle based artist replaying his
tapes archives and found sounds from stars activities and hissy haunting
buddhist chants recorded in the 90'. The material is rough, treated live
in a straight and deliberately not talkative approach. Two strong pieces
surrounded by Posset's shadow moving in the back.
Artwork and layout by Benjamin L. Aman, B&W print on paper with violet transparent sleeve, dub'd in real time.
